Flat Earth Follies: Mount Diablo from Loomis CA

Image
Flat Earth Claim You shouldn't be able to see Mount Diablo from the "High point" of Loomis (at ~700 ft). Further Claims: Mount Diablo is 100 miles away The Facts As per usual, Flat Earthers fail to give accurate and basic information, like the location where the video was filmed.  We're told "Loomis".  Ok so Loomis is 75 miles from Mt. Diablo, not 100 miles as the video claims. But even poking around to find somewhere about 700 foot elevation that matches the terribly filmed view (I've seen better Big Foot footage) I settled on 38°47'26.96"N / 121° 7'43.57"W Heading 214.3° as a likely surrogate / similar view.  This location is 75.8 miles from Mt Diablo.  Whatever, a few miles either way doesn't matter much.  If we had 4k stable video and accurate data... So that puts us at a mere 1256.5 feet obscured on the old calculator  of the distant mountain. PeakFinder  has no issue with this view or distance and shows that the peak of Mount ...

Catalog of Flat Earth Claims & Refutations

Image
I've tried to create a catalog of the major Flat Earth claims and their refutations, with links to supporting resources and data.  The links typically contain much more data and technical details about each subject. Feel free to add more in the comments! Earth Looks Flat High-Altitude Footage Looks Flat Earth Spin 1040 mph Horizon always rises to "eye-level" 8"  × miles squared should be hidden by curvature Buildings should be tilted away from us Sun rays prove the Sun is nearby Zoom brings things back Perspective & Vanishing Point explain why you can't see things Gravity Doesn't Exist, it is Density! Flat Earth Follies: Flight Times versus Airplane Speed - Globe Wins

Image
Flat Earth has a big problem down under.  They can squeak by in the North on excuses because the distortion on their various Flat Maps is minimized but as you get further and further South the distances become so outrageously distorted that Flat Earthers end up just denying reality to excuse their gross error. Let's first think about how lines of latitude work on a Globe: Figure 1. Lines of Latitude Each line of latitude North or South of the Equator is smaller around than those closer to the Equator. Indeed, to follow a line of Latitude around the globe, with the exception of the Equator, you must change compass heading.  As you get closer to the Poles the rate at which you must change compass heading increases.  Imagine being just 10 feet from the North Pole and running around in a circle around it, you would obviously be running around it in a tight circle. But if you look at the Gleason map, or any other North Pole centered projection then you are going to have a trem...

Flat Earth Follies: Optical Zoom is MAGICAL!

Image
Flat Earth Claim Zooming in will bring distant objects back into view, proving there is no curvature hiding them. Figure 1. Spongebob says Zoom is Magical The Facts I think Flat Earthers tend to forget that the observer height allows you to see OVER a lot of the curvature -- this is why your horizon distance increases with height in the first place. But no, zoom doesn't do anything to objects that are actually over the horizon as can be seen very clearly in this very short zoom video  (<< use link for full screen). link to video ONLY IF the object is not actually over the Horizon can zooming in on something that is too small to see with your naked-eye (or current magnification) bring it back into view.  So yes, you can find many circumstances where you can zoom way in and see something you couldn't before.  Whoop-de-do. Zooming in here didn't bring ANYTHING back into view, it just made the view uniformly larger to our eyes.  This is the case that Flat Earthers ...

Flat Earth Honesty: A Mountain Of Evidence

Image
I'm often giving Flat Earthers a bit of a hard time.  'Bit' maybe an understatement :) So, for a change of pace, I'm going to give Jon McIntyre a shout out for admitting error and at least seemingly being one actually looking for the truth of the matter. Jon first posted a video called " Flat Earth... A Mountain of Evidence " that purports to show a bunch of 'missing' curvature by looking at mountain peaks in the Nantahala National Forest, southwest of Asheville, North Carolina. Left to right: Bald Knob, Pinnacle, Graybeard, Fryingpan You might want to watch both the original video (can skip to about 44 minutes in) and  Sly Sparkane 's video  response and review  ( Jesse Kozlowski also did an analysis video but it's less to the point and misses some of Jon's errors). Long story short: the measurements are wrong, his location was wrong (shows view from Tennent mountain but was actually closer to Frying Pan mountain near Grassy Cove), his a...

Horizon Calculator Discussion Page

Image
I created a new Horizon Calculator , hopefully a useful one.  And if not put in a request as a comment here and I'll see what I can do. The details on the calculations can be found in my derivation of the formula for distance to horizon and obscured by horizon page  and the high altitude page which talks about taking that down to the expected number of pixels in an image. You can hover over the labels for additional information. Supports observer height, object distance, earth radius and refraction conditions. The results are displayed in a variety of imperial and metric units. It updates the Location URL and has a permalink on the page as well. It's still pretty new (2016-11-03) so there might be bugs, please report them here. You can learn more about the drop & obscured over arc (great circle) distance in  Keigh See's video and this short derivation paper (which I have simplified in my version  using a different approach). Interface Details Inputs Figur...

Flat Earth Follies: Neil deGrasse Tyson says the Earth is Shaped Like A Pear

Image
Neil deGrasse Tyson once said the Earth is "pear-shaped" which has Flat Earthers apparently trembling in fear (or ignorance, hard to tell). Surely, even Flat Earthers can understand it's not LITERALLY a pear right? What he actually SAID was that it was " like pear-shaped " because " it's slightly wider below the equator than above the equator ".  Note how Flat Earth liars exclude and ignore the "like" and "slightly" parts. So when you spin pizza dough it kind of flattens out, gets wider in the middle. So, Earth, throughout it's life, even when it formed it was spinning and it got a little wider at the equator than it does at the poles. So it's not actually a sphere, it's an.. it's oblate. Officially it's an oblate spheroid, that's what we call it.  But not only that it's slightly wider below the equator than above the equator... A little chubbier? Yeah, cubbie is a good word, it's  like pear-s...
